Sverdrup #16: Of what benefit, then, is the Law?
1. It points out to us our sins and the wrath of God toward sin.
2. It makes us anxious to seek Christ.
3. It points out to the believer what fruits his faith must bear.
Where do we find this idea in the confessional writing?
This sounds like a re-wording of the three functions of the Law, which we find throughout the BoC, but especially in the Large Catechism, and in the Formula of Concord (Article VI), and in the Augsburg Confession & Apology (repeated comparisons between justification and good works).
I’m actually looking for specifics because I have also read and heard recently that the three uses of the law are 1. government/legal; 2. condemning sin; and 3. how we should then live. This list is different than Sverdrup’s which is more in line what I was taught in confirmation class way back when.
