Being Lutheran Podcast Episode #146 - Vocation in Society, Part 2
/

In this episode, Brett, Brian, and Jason continue their discussion on the doctrine of vocation and our roles in society. Vocation more often than not looks like the dirt under our fingernails rather than the polished, ivory tower theology Christians are often accused of.

  1. This is a question on vocation. Is it possible to speak about a form of “vocatio interna” regarding the priesthood of all believers. It seems to me that in Lutheran thinking, vocatio is always mediated. There seems to be no clear theological room for an internal vocation prompted by the spirit. Is this true? (vocatio interna vel carnatas)

    1. There is absolutely room for an inner call. The difference is, at least from a Lutheran perspective, is that we tend to focus on the external and revealed. I’m not sure how that would relate to an “inner vocation”, as that’s terminology I’m not familiar with, but an inner call and prompting by the Spirit is certainly a biblical concept. We just would advise caution with that because our sinful natures are not often capable of distinguishing between an inner prompting of the Spirit and the lusts and desires of our own sinful flesh.
