Being Lutheran Podcast Episode #160 - Augsburg Confession Article 2, Part 1
/

In this episode, Brett, Brian, and Jason begin their examination of Article 2 of the Augsburg Confession and the Apology of the Augsburg Confession. In Article 2, Lutherans confess the biblical understanding of original sin, including the theological truth of concupiscence – the desire to sin is sin itself.

  1. I was interested in you guys raising the differences between Catholics and Lutherans (and the Reformed) on the issue of concupiscence. I found the position taken on this topic by the Council of Trent to be really disturbing. In in the last sentence of the 5th point of the First Decree in the section titled “Concerning Original Sin” in Session 5 they wrote :

“This concupiscence, which the apostle sometimes calls sin, the holy Synod declares that the Catholic Church has never understood it to be called sin, as being truly and properly sin in those born again, but because it is of sin, and inclines to sin.”

This, in my opinion, is a great example of how far a group can go when you deny Sola Scriptura. It empowers them with a feeling of freedom to denounce even what an apostle wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. It really is shocking.

    1. 100% agree. Once you abandon Scripture as normative, you start playing with words and get lost in the semantics, and that’s how you end up with Rome’s position on concupiscence.
